ACA input to Thematic review on climate change and sustainability

The ACA welcomes the opportunity to provide input to the IFoA Thematic Review on climate change and sustainability.

Our response is set out below. We only responded to questions that we believe are relevant to the ACA as a representative body, rather than as a firm directly employing actuaries. The key points of our response are:

  • Climate risk is an emerging area where knowledge and understanding of the risks and the potential impact are developing rapidly, and the potential impact of the risks are huge. As actuaries are generally considered risk specialists (especially consulting actuaries), climate and sustainability are crucial areas for the profession to be well versed in, and to be able to help our clients navigate.
  • Firms where ACA members are involved in a wide range of areas to which climate and sustainability risks are relevant. We believe the IFOA has an important role in ensuring guidance to actuaries in this area, and education and learning materials, are up to date, relevant to the practice areas actuaries are working in, and incorporate evolving research and understanding, and we support the continual development by the IFOA of further guidance and educational material in the areas of climate and sustainability to ensure that the profession remains at the leading edge of climate and sustainability thinking and that actuaries continue to be seen as professionals with a credible role to play in supporting public understanding of climate and sustainability risks in financial systems.
